Southern Methodist University

Established in 1911 by the Methodist Episcopal Church, SMU now boasts a long legacy of high standards and over 100,000 alumni. That vision for “higher” standards is what led the University’s first president, Robert S. Hyer, to select “Harvard Crimson” and “Yale Blue” for the school colors. Higher education is what you should expect in attending Southern Methodist. Postgraduate Mustangs represent nearly 45% of the total 10,901.

Total average tuition, room and board $38,200/yr.

How’s the Dallas real estate market?

The median price for housing in Dallas in 2007 comes to $151,300. That amount would appreciate 17.78% on average after 5 years and 3.80% at the 1 year mark. Relatively moderate home price increases combined with one of the highest foreclosure rates in the country has investors from all over beginning to take notice of the opportunities in Dallas investment properties.

Also, the continued expansion of the George Bush Tollway and the DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit system) should add to home values universally in the North Dallas suburbs, especially near to Love Field (close to campus) where the DART will have several routes.

Interested in leasing?

You’d be wise to start looking at least 45 days before the school start period. Strict-leasing codes and insanely high prices with fewer amenities send most students away from the University/Highland Park areas. Savvy students are heading about a mile east across the highway into Uptown where the selection is more plentiful, and exponentially more cost-effective.
