The University of Notre Dame – South Bend, Indiana

Nestled just northeast of the city of South Bend, Indiana lies one of the most famous Universities in the United States, Notre Dame. The beautiful Notre Dame is the home of the Fighting Irish and to nearly 10,500 students. Nearly 90% of the students that attend Notre Dame are from out of state. With Michigan just a few minutes drive north of campus and Illinois to the west at the intersection of Lake Michigan, the area has been nicknamed Mishiana. And students have only to take a short trip to leave the state, much less the city.

That’s not to say that they should particularly want to, however. While the campus is technically located in Notre Dame, IN, it’s more likely that due to proximity, students would consider South Bend to be the campus hometown. South Bend has several offering for students to enjoy, including bowling alleys, movie theaters, and a great number of restaurants. Efforts are underway to spur economic growth in South Bend. The St. Joe Valley Metronet is a not for profit organization attempting to create a more robust telecommunications infrastructure capable of inexpensive high-speed data transmission. It is thought this could bring more high tech firms to the city and surrounding area. Redevelopment is underway for some of the abandoned industrial facilities, with the abandoned Oliver Corp. buildings being the most recent example of reclaimed property.

Real estate in South Bend

”This is one of the most affordable places to buy a home in the country”, reports Mary Dunfee of Jim Dunfee Realty. “Listings for 2-3 bedroom homes begin anywhere from 60K-120K.” The Dunfees have been serving the South Bend and surrounding areas for over 45 years now and are College Real Estate’s exclusive partner’s in the area.

And while the annual appreciation of South Bend has not seen the highs that many booming markets have, it has yet to see the lows that many markets are experiencing now across the country. Apartments and home renting are also popular options for students in this area, but the properties are limited. It’s best to begin your search for a lease about 6 months prior to your planned move-in to assure the best options.
