Gonzaga University – Spokane, Washington

Gonzaga University, home to 4,500 proud students, is a private Catholic university in Spokane, Washington. It was founded in 1887 by a Jesuit society and named after the patron saint of youth, St. Aloysius Gonzaga. The campus is located on 108 acres of grassland along the Spokane River in a residential setting and within walking distance of downtown Spokane.

Spokane is the metropolitan center of the Inland Northwest, the second largest city in Washington state, and the fourth largest city in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. The city is set in the forested Rocky Mountain foothills, the Selkirk Mountains. The Spokane River passes through the city, tumbling through several falls downtown before making its way into the Columbia river.

A full year’s tuition will run you $26,120. Then, add typical room and board at $7,520.

The school tries very hard to direct students toward financial aid. For the 2006-2007, nearly 96% of undergrad students received financial aid.

University District

Just slightly north-east of downtown, the area boasts three campuses that connect in one large district of academic energy and student vitality. The district contains Gonzaga University and its 6,000 undergraduate students, as well as Washington State University - Spokane and Eastern Washington University's Riverpoint Campus. Plans call for dramatic increases in the student population in coming years, as well as additional housing, services, and entertainment geared toward a young, professional audience. Significant renewal and renovation, primarily of professional and medical business, is occurring in the area east of Division, west of Hamilton and north of the I-90 freeway.

You will see apartments on almost every other street corner when you’re nearing the Gonzaga campus. However, due to a recent increase in enrollment, finding the one you really would like may be more difficult than in years past. Start looking at least 2 months before you want to move in, and bear in mind that there are also many houses nearby with residents leasing spare bedrooms and garage apartments. Keep your eyes peeled for these when you’re driving through the area. The landlords will be getting back to you by phone, so keep it handy, because if they can’t reach you, they will likely move on to the next person on the list. You’ll find 1 bedrooms start around $400, and generally, you can add $125+ for each additional bedroom.
